Workshop Instructor BiosGlenn Bannerman is the Professor Emeritus of Recreation and Outdoor Education for the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. Glenn has been an active leader of ARW for 53 years. He has taught all types of Folk Dance throughout the USA, Europe and Central-South America. Many of the dances at ARW were introduced by Glenn and his wife, Evelyn. Jon Brown has served in local parishes, a national conference center (Montreat), and the General Assembly Mission Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) where he served as Director for Mission Interpretation. In that role he had oversight for the Special Oerings, Presbyterian Planning Calendar, Mission Yearbook, and Presbyterians Today magazine. Having completed his term of bureaucratic mission service, Jon now is having the time of his life as pastor of an amazingly diverse and multicultural congregation just outside New York City. There he gets to sing with children, paint banners with the youth, feed the hungry, lead worship, provide pastoral care, and occasionally throw confetti from the sanctuary balcony. Aaron Ferry is the Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministries at the West Nashville Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. Aaron will be completing his Master of Divinity at Memphis Theological Seminary in December 2011. Aaron has provided recreation leadership at retreats, camps, and conferences for the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, including the Presbyterian Youth Triennium in 2007 and 2010, and he will be serving as the Recreation Ministry Sta Leader for the 2013 Triennium. Aaron loves to laugh, play, travel, and listening to good live music, but especially enjoys relaxing and spending time with his wife Mary Kate and their dog, Pearl. When he has free time, Aaron is an avid golfer and sports fanatic. Kelly Fitzgerald did Youth Ministry for years before she actually knew what she was doing. Out of that practice comes a practical approach to how to work with young people. She studied at Columbia Theological Seminary where she spent way too much time reading books about how to “do ministry.” Her real joy stems from translating all that God knowledge in ways that help make a meaningful impact in real life. Kelly has served various churches in youth and children's ministry roles and written some curriculum for WeBelieve, but is now serving Suncoast Hospice as a CPE Intern. Her family now calls Clearwater, FL home. Deb Guess is a jewelry artist and instructor, mom and wife, a gardener, a tennis player, and a lover of books. As a former educator, recreator, and youth and campus minister, Deb still occasionally consults and leads special events in churches and other settings. Deck Guess is married to Deb, parent to Chandler, Josh, Lauren, and Cullen master of Schnitzel (yeah, right!) and pastor of Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg, NC. He dabbles in stained and fused glass. He plays tennis and Word Twist (high score 1520, but only once). He also owns golf clubs (but often wonders why). Bruce Gunn is an Emergency Room Physician at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville, NC. He spends his free time gardening, building furniture, and a little golf on the side. His delight these days is being “Grumps” to Kenleigh, his granddaughter. Bruce’s all time favorite childhood game – building forts in the woods behind their house. Carl Horton leads the PC(U.S.A.)’s Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. He is all about nurturing and equipping God’s people as peacemakers. A lifelong Presbyterian of the Southern California variety, Carl has served on the pastoral staff of Presbyterian churches in Tarzana, California and Lincoln, Nebraska. In recent years he has been an interim pastor in several of the congregations of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery, namely Shelbyville, Springdale, Second Louisville, and First Frankfort. He served as Coordinator for Church Leader Support with the General Assembly Mission Council from 2000- 2004. Recently Carl has become a backyard farmer with 4 raised beds. Ann Laird Jones has been a Presbyterian minister for 28 years and a potter even longer. She lives in Greenville, Mississippi, where she is Stated Supply Pastor at the Hollandale, Benoit and Sumner Presbyterian Churches. During the summers she is the Director of Arts Ministry at Montreat Conference Center, and loves being a part of the fun people have with clay! Her DMin is in Arts and Theology, which is her favorite thing to talk about. Ann’s grandfather, Jonathon Jones, taught puppetry, marionettes and wood carving at the very earliest ARWs, when they were held at NaKoMe. Marilyn Jones started Sally Jones pottery in its present form 37 years ago. She is from Louisville, and holds a Master’s degree in Ceramics and Art Education. She is an avid potter, and has a “pottery salon” in her basement. Brian Maness has worked in sports and recreation for over fifteen years. Brian has taught stained glass classes for most of this time. He loves the creative side of stained glass and loves sharing this art with others. When not working, Brian enjoys biking, camping, and hiking. Roger Maness has been in Recreational Ministry for 39 years. He is the co-author of The Playbook and Dutch Oven 101. Roger will share his creative and instructional side in the stained glass studio. Sophie Maness is the Director of Children's Ministries at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. She thoroughly enjoys laughing learning and playing with children of all ages. Leslie McCarthy has offered her creativity, hospitality, experience, and talent to ARW for manyyears. She runs her own fabric business, Making Ends Meet, in Shelbyville, KY, which allows her to always stay on the cutting-edge of new art ideas. She is the go-to person on theme and event decorating on a shoestring budget. She is an energetic, patient, and skilled leader. Mark Montgomery is a pastor, living the good life in the rocking state of Connecticut. Hailing from SC, his favorite season used to be the fall. Having lived in the snowy Northeast for 10 years now, his new favorite season is summer! In every season, he likes to paint, pontificate and play. Howard Moore is a graduate of The University of South Carolina in mathematics and retired from Sonoco Products Company as Director of Corporate Compensation and Benefits. He has been a woodcarver for over 60 years. Howard has taught wood-working classes at ARW with Dick Porter for over 30 years. Dick Porter is a retired pantyhose maker from Sara Lee Corporation. He has taught dulcimer making at ARW with Howard Moore for over 30 years. In the past several years, they have taught classes in shaker box making, folk toy making, knife making and the list goes on. Hand tools are their specialty! Peggy Stansell is a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother who has enjoyed family fun in many ages and stages of life. Her life experience includes being a Director of Christian Education, recreation leader, puppeteer, camper, song leader, and elementary and preschool teacher. Brian Thompson is a Forensic Consultant with KPMG, Atlanta, GA. Don’t let his day job fool you. Brian gets out from the office as much as he can to enjoy the outdoors. He has a passion for youth and volunteers as a high school advisor and leader for middle school outdoor adventures. Just say the word recreation, and Brian wants to be involved. Lynn Turnage is Director of Children & Family Ministries, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC. She loves playing games with all ages of God’s children, believes that all we do should spring from worship of our gracious God, likes exploring dierent ways to play and to pray, loves chocolate, Montreat, anything outdoors, and any time with her girls! Beth Watson serves Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin TX, as the Contemporary Worship Director. She has a long history of denominational leadership in music, recreation, and worship, and is super excited to be back at ARW after a few years away. Beth spent a number of years in Camp and Conference Ministry and Campus Ministry. She is a fan of Mexican vanilla, Texas beaches, homegrown tomatoes and campfire singing. Marilyn Werst has been involved in youth ministry for over 40 years. She began this journey in the Lutheran church in California and has spent over 30 years in local, regional and national youth ministry in the Episcopal church.
